Show 497 Wednesday 12 September
The show of 12 September YouTube.
Hi, I'm Sarah. Welcome to the Daily English Show.
Wednesday is Fehlertag. And the other day I discovered a bug on a plate here at Acadia. Today I went back to make a photo of the sign, but I had completely forgotten where the building was, so you have me simply believe that it really is a sign. The error was this: thank you (thank you) was written with a hyphen.
I found it quite funny, because I can, I think, have seen never written with a hyphen. It is not a common mistake, as far as I know. But people often make mistakes with hyphens, including me. I do not think I ever thank you have written with a hyphen, but I made another mistake. In the Daily English show I once no one hyphenated written. No one has no hyphen.
other day I discovered something interesting, dashes on. I work as a proofreader for a magazine called Sceen that comes from Germany. The authors are all that is German and her English is excellent and their style is good ... but their mother tongue is German, so they sometimes make strange errors. Well, weird for me because I do not speak German, so I sometimes think, "Why the hell should I write something?" And then I ask one of them and said to me: "Oh, we write it in German." Therefore, so are the errors. It is really interesting.
And in German, they seem to use a lot of words, where they are in English not in use. When I check lyrics, I stumble over many random compound hyphens.
Anyway, when should I use hyphens? Well, I recommend a look at the (English) Wikipedia article on dashes throw. There are some usage examples.
And some very interesting matters, such as the following:
a complete list of rules for the use of hyphens does not exist. Therefore, the author or editor of a style manual or dictionary of his choice for help, one thing is that is geared for the rules in the country in which he writes.
An example of the country specific use of the hyphen is coworker / co-worker (work colleague).
This is also from Wikipedia: has
The use of hyphens in general declined steadily, both in entertainment and in the scientific literature.
Whether one uses a hyphen or not is therefore sometimes simply by a self-dependent. When writing for an academic institution or publish something, one should look, what style is commonly used.
I tend to use hyphens if no confusion is possible. But sometimes something may misunderstood , so that the use of the hyphen is justified.
For example: -American football player
Without hyphen could thus either a football player or a player from the United States of America To Be Safe Footballs think.
If you are not sure, you should look somewhere or ask someone. When I sometimes am not sure about grammar or spelling, I type it just a Google and if it is wrong it says: you mean this or that? There is no foolproof method, but can sometimes be helpful.
And such words as goodbye, no one , thank you - they never write with Hyphen and one must remember that simple.
