Show 484 Thursday 30 August
The show of 30 August YouTube.
Hi, I'm Sarah. Welcome to the Daily English Show.
The video, which I will talk about today is the famous clip the Miss South Carolina.
This video clip is pretty funny. Well, at least I think so, and millions of people seem to find him entertaining. But I think that some English learners may not understand why he's funny - so I thought I would explain it.
She was asked the following question:
Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can not find the U.S. on the world map. Why do you think that is?
your answer:
I personally believe that U.S. Americans can not, because, ah, some people out there in our nation have no maps. And I believe that our bi-formation as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like such as this. And ... I think they should ... Our education should be here in the U.S. or the U.S. or should help South Africa. And should help Iraq and the Asian countries so that it is possible for us to build the future for us and our children.
The first funny thing she said was: U.S. Americans (Americans) . There is no U.S. Americans because all Americans from the United States. You can say things like Canadian-Americans (Americans of Canadian descent) - like Jim Carrey, of a dual citizenship. or African Americans (African Americans) , people who were born in America, but whose ancestors come from Africa. But U.S. Americans ... no, that can not be said. ( I do not think it is wrong or funny, but it is also used in the German "Americans" mostly to citizens of the United States, translator's note )
Then she says, the reasons why people, the United States could not be found on the world map, was that they had no cards. What is grammatically correct - but it is a stupid answer, so that's funny.
Then she says "Such as our education like in South Africa ..." (Our education like in South Africa ...), which makes no sense because the American educational system has nothing to do with South Africa.
also tells her: like, such as (such as, for example) ... both of which mean the same thing, it does not have to use both together. But you can if you want, this is not a big mistake.
But they finished the set with searchable as, which is very strange. You should use search before as an example.
They also said the Iraq (Iraq) - which is odd. They do not put the from Iraq. Is actually one before the country names, most not. But even before a few. For example the Netherlands (the Netherlands), the Philippines (the Philippines), the Dominican Republic (Dominican Republic), the United States (United States).
They also said the Asian countries (Asian countries) , which sounds strange in this context. You should have said, America should help Iraq and Asian countries (America should help the Iraq and Asian countries) . But even then, it would still be funny because it do with the question of has to do.
It is also funny that she is suddenly talking about Iraq and South Africa. Iraq is currently often in the news, perhaps it is this country so easily come to mind, but South Africa - what does this have to do with the whole?
And anyway I think the funniest thing is: with her voice and the way she stands there, and her broad smile at the end - it looks as if it were really confident and as if all this is perfectly logical. But it is not.
I think it has potential to become the next Paris Hilton.

# 299 There are hundreds of countries around the world
Step 1: Repeat Brad's text.
Step 2: Read Brad's text and talk to Sarah.
Brad Speaking of cards, you think you can show the world all the countries on the map?
Sarah No way! There are hundreds of countries around the world.
Brad How many are there exactly?
Sarah I do not know. Just wait, I'll see after. Hmm, here is that there are 244 countries ... but it sounds confusing, depending on what you record in the list. Whatever the reason, a few hundred.
Brad How many do you think you can identify on de map?
Sarah Perhaps twenty or thirty.
Brad That's it?
Sarah Yes. But who cares ... know if you will, where something is, then you look after it. I do not need all this information to keep in mind
Brad All right.
Sarah At least that's what I learned in school. It is important to know how to look up stuff than to facts by heart.
