Hi, I'm Sarah. Welcome to the Daily English Show.
This week is a very special week. It is our last here in Nelson.
And today we have another guest: Steve from the White House (White House).
The White House is a hostel for backpackers here in Nelson. I was there are never visited, since we are here because we WWOOF.
But I was there once to visit someone. And I was there for a second time when Artwalk ... and I also met Steve, and I thought he was to interview well. So I interviewed
it today. And it's great to talk to him. One of the things I asked him was:
Why did you called it the White House?
the White House. We have gone through many names.
We were not sure.
We have constantly changed our opinion.
We registered many names on the Web.
And we registered at a few different names ... the authorities.
None of them was the right one.
We ... the name, the White House. He, he was ... ah, many of the locals here designated the house as the White House. As I described, where the building materials should be delivered. When, as, ah, as we renovated. The people ... As I described, where it was, they said, "Oh, you mean the White House."
And my wife took the name of that great and at first I thought, "Oh, I do not know, it sounds a bit American."
But we thought maybe we could play with the name. And so, to, yes, we regard it as a kind of alternative to the other White House.
It is a name that is the people in the head. And we get free advertising by the other.

Step 1: Repeat Sarah's text.
Step 2: Read Sarah's text and talk to Sarah.
Sarah How long has it open already hostel?
Steve We have opened last October. Ah, mid-October. We opened our doors and then waited two days on our first guest. Asked us whether we had made a terrible mistake or not.
Sarah Where was your first guest?
Steve Our first guest came from the United Kingdom. He was a mountain biker named Russ. Nice guy. He, he to to called and asked if there was ever place. Came from a bus depot. And He was pretty excited to be the first.
Sarah why you decided to open up a hostel for backpackers?
Steve I wanted to move back to Nelson. I am here, ah, as a child grew up and lived in Australia. I knew that there were not many jobs in Nelson, but it seemed like a good place to live. Order, and the opportunity was favorable. Well, the house was put up for sale. Um, I had not, I was not going to open a hostel. But we looked at the house and it was too big to live in it and it was just a cool house and we thought, "What could we do with it Ah, would it? make a great hostel. "
Sarah than that which used the building before? Was it a house?
Steve It was a Wohnaus until the 1960s in and then it was converted into a business office. It was different Government authorities as such. order as a last there was an employment office. In order, until three years ago. Then it was closed and was for some years empty, fell more and more. And it was simply looking for a new owner. According to someone who, ah, a little love and care put into it.
Sarah What do you think is important for such a hostel?
Steve Well, I did some research employed. In addition to my ... I had my own ideas. But I thought I could not completely rely on it. I did some research, some web-based research. Some polls and such. And the number one factor that many people called, was cleanliness. Shortly before, in order, a place with a special feeling. No special word for it, just a place where people feel themselves.
Besides, good showers. Comfortable beds. Well equipped kitchens. To, a place to, uh ... where participants are comfortable and cozy sitting outside. We have a beautiful patio here, where, where ... she is very popular in Summer. On warm nights. Order, many small things Storage space and a place where you have free internet, people like this Yes, many small things, but above all cleanliness.
Sarah Where do most of your guests?
Steve This is mixed. A while ago we had ... I went through the list when we were completely booked. And sechsundzwangzig people was only a Canadian. But, ah, from anywhere. We already have quite a few Americans, because we are pretty close to the border.
Many Europeans, many Kiwis to more Kiwis than Australians, which is surprising. In order, perhaps, I would say Kiwis are number three after Canadians, Americans and Kiwis. Many Swiss, German, especially in winter. From anywhere. Some Japanese, some Chinese, some Koreans. And in some countries, we had no guests. But I'm sure we will be able to tick them all before we're done here.
